Lent and Ash Wednesday

Ash wednesday, in the Christian religion is a day of repentance and marks the first day of Lent, which occurs 40 days prior to easter. Lent period is spent fasting and praying mainly practiced by catholics, methodist, baptist, lutherans and anglicans.

According to the books of Matthew, Luke and Hebrews, Jesus spent 40 days fasting in the desert before beggining his public ministries, during which time he endured temtation from Satan.  In other sciptures from the bible, ashes were used to express mourning. Dusting oneself with ashes was the pentinants way of expressing sorrow for sins and faults. (Examples Daniel 9:3 / Job 42:3-6).

Ash Wednesday is spent in complete fast, pertaining to one meal and excluding meat. Lent period is the fasting or the giving up of any item onesself is reliant on in the name of the Lord e.g. smoking, alcohol etc. In modern society less harmful items are still accepted for sacrifice such as coffee and chocolate.

For Lent this year i have chosen to give up alcohol, in Jesus Christ, may we all repent and live in the name of the Lord God, Amen.
